Attorney Ronald A. Shems

Ronald A. Shems provides counsel and litigation services on environmental, regulatory, appellate, commercial, and civil rights matters. He is currently litigating several complex environmental matters including matters addressing climate change and innovative approaches to pollution control. He also serves as general counsel to several businesses and organizations. Prior to co-founding SDKS in 2001, Ron worked for fifteen years at the Vermont Attorney General's Office. In his last five years there, he split his time between special assignments managing complex constitutional and regulatory cases, and as the Environmental Unit's senior Assistant Attorney General. Ron has successfully handled dozens of cases before state and federal appellate courts. He is a recipient of the prestigious National Association of Attorneys General 'Best Brief Award' for excellence in brief writing in the United States Supreme Court and the 'Marvin Award' for effectively coordinating the several States' diverse interests in litigating matters of national importance. He received a BA from Clark University in 1981, and a JD and Masters in Environmental Law in 1985 from Vermont Law School.
